Roadway/Roadside Path Safety

Ride Safe. Have Fun!

Sat Jun 16, 11:30am*-2pm
Lincoln School Campus

This is our kick off even to promote responsible roadway recreation in Lincoln!  Our roadways are multi-use public assets that need to be shared for the safety of all.  We aim to  promote the rights of all users and encourage behaviors that make driving, riding, walking, and running safer and easier.

This is a cycling-safety event that will be offering organized bike rides, a children’s bike rodeo, various vendors, free lunch and swimming for all riders and is free for all-ages!

Bikewell is part of the Health Community Project outlined below:

Use and condition of roadside paths, safety of bicyclists and motorists on roads

This issue involves two components with overlapping interests: roadside paths and bicyclists/motorists. Overall, this issue generated the highest number of survey responses and revealed a high degree of tension between bicyclists and motorists. The roadside paths appear to be underused because of their condition and limited coverage throughout town.

To address these concerns, the project initiated a task force that looked at each issue discretely and simultaneously, to develop stategies to address roadway safety and roadside path safety issues, as well as the over-arching issue of promoting safe options for healthy, outdoor lifestyles.

This has led to the creation of ACCESSLINCOLN.ORG,  a volunteer driven, municipally supported initiative to promote safe outdoor environments where residents can lead active, healthy lives.  AccessLincoln currently has two projects lined up:

  • Determines opportunities to improve the safety of our  roadside paths system
  • Identifies high impact opportunities for better pedestrian connections throughout the community
  • Highlights existing recommendations included in prior Town plans and committees
  • Supports projects that are consistent with Town character and aesthetics, have the least impact on abutters, and are environmentally sensitive.
